Spring 2010 Courses

EDSP 4420 EDSP 4420G - Foundations of Deaf Education - Prerequisite: EDSP 4000 or consent of department. The physiological, psychological, historical, and sociological and cultural aspects of deafness and hearing loss.

EDSP 4440/4440G - Sign Language 1. An introduction to sign language and fingerspelling. Receptive and expressive sign language skills will be emphasized with specific focus on the ability to participate in functional communication situational. An overview of the variety of sign systems used in educational settings will be presented.

EDSP 4450/4450G - Sign Language 2 - Prerequisite: EDSP 4440. A course designed to develop both receptive and expressive fluency in Sign Language(s) according to the needs of the individuals in the class.
T/Th 4:30-5:45 – UNO Campus

EDSP 6460 - Spoken Language Development for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing  - This course focuses on the techniques for diagnosing, analyzing, developing and correcting spoken language skills. It includes principles of anatomy and physiology of the speech mechanisms, a review of the anatomy and physiology of the hearing mechanism, speech reading skill development, and collaborative work activities.

EDSP 6945 Practicum Deaf/Hard of Hearing (Department Consent Required) Field work, observations, seminars, lectures, and/or empirical research projects with hearing impaired children or adults in an academic or rehabilitation setting.

(Note: Stipend opportunities may not be available for the 2009-10 academic year, due to funding limitations) Distance and On-Campus Course Offerings Eligible students with passing grades will be awarded $500 per online and summer institute course. These funds are intended to defray costs associated with attending courses offered through the LA-LIDC. Students are expected to pay for tuition and fees when they register at the beginning of the semester and will receive their stipends after final grades are posted.

To apply and register for courses at UNO:

New students or students who have missed a semester must visit http://admissions.uno.edu/app.cfm for application information. Once accepted you may register through the WEBSTAR link on the UNO homepage ( http://www.uno.edu ). All current UNO students can register for these classes as they usually do through WEBSTAR. Once registered you will be entered into your course’s Blackboard site. It is important that you check your course Blackboard site the week before classes to make sure you are ready to attend your first class.

Unless otherwise noted, all courses offered above are delivered online.

These courses are offered via interactive videoconferencing on the web at http://lalidc.uno.edu. Students MUST have weekly access to a high speed internet connection (DSL, Cable or better), a web camera, and headset with microphone (both available for about $40.00 each at numerous local retailers like Best Buy, Office Depot, Wal-Mart).
