Louisiana Tech University

 

Winter 2008 ~ Distance and On-Campus Course Offerings

Eligible students with passing grades will be awarded $500 per online and summer institute course.  These funds are intended to defray costs associated with attending courses offered through the LA-LIDC.  Students are expected to pay for tuition and fees when they register at the beginning of the semester and will receive their stipends after final grades are posted.

Professional Development & Research Institute on Blindness

 

 

EPSY 582 Orientation & Mobility I (onsite)

Course provides an examination  and application of the fundamental principles and theories of orientation and mobility.  Students progress through a graduated  travel curriculum.

EDCI 578 Braille II (online/onsite)

Course introduces Nemeth (math), music, foreign language and computer Braille codes while increasing student’ speed and accuracy in reading & writing Braille, transcribing print materials and proofreading Braille materials.

Preq., Braille I, (or proficiency with Literary Braille code)

 

EDCI 466 Adaptive Technology for the Visually Impaired (onsite)

Students learn to use state-of-the-art technology designed for the blind/visually impaired learner.

 

EDUC 530 Internship in Teaching (onsite)

Supervised teaching experience in Teaching Blind/Visually Impaired students. Registration by application only; requires approval of academic advisor and Director of Field and Clinical Experiences.

UNO Spring 2009 Courses

Significant Impairments

EDSP 6000 - Study Severe Communication Disorders 3 cr.  Thursday, on-line, 5:00pm -7:40pm

Prerequisite: EDSP 6040 or consent of department. A study of assessment and instructional strategies for nonsymbolic communication and prelanguage/language skills. Design of alternative and augmentative communication systems for learners with severe disabilities. Emphasis on strategies to increase meaningful communication opportunities across multiple partners situations and settings.

EDSP 6050 - Advanced Instructional Issue in Severe Disabilities 3 cr. Monday, on-line, 5:00pm - 7:40pm

Prerequisites: EDSP 4010 or consent of department. Continued examination of key issues related to design, implementation, and evaluation of effective educational services for learners with severe disabilities. Emphasis on advanced instructional issues including: meeting the needs of special populations, making data-based decisions, addressing building level instructional issues, and adjusting existing strategies to improve their effectiveness. Students must complete a professional development plan through participation in a field experience cohort as a component of this course.

EDSP 6900 - Practicum – Students with Severe/Profound Disabilities 3 cr.  (Arranged Time)

Prerequisite: consent of department. Field work, observations, seminars, lectures, and/or empirical research projects in programs that provide services for individuals with severe profound handicapping conditions.

Autism

EDSP 6210 - Introduction People with Autism 3 cr. Tuesday on-line, 5:00pm - 7:40pm

An exploration of how the diagnosis of autism is established a review of current research and a consideration of the management of people with autism in schools and in the community.

 

Deaf/Hard of Hearing (Hearing Impairments)

EDSP 4440/4440G - Sign Language I  3 cr.  Tuesday and Thursday, on-campus, 1:30pm – 2:45pm

An introduction to sign language and fingerspelling. Receptive and expressive sign language skills will be emphasized with specific focus on the ability to participate in functional communication situational. An overview of the variety of sign systems used in educational settings will be presented.

EDSP 6420 - Educational Audiology 3 cr. Wednesday, on-line, 4:30pm -7:10pm

The application of current audiological technology and techniques to deaf education and speech therapy for the deaf. A basic course in audiology for teachers in all areas of Special Education, but particularly for those in deaf education, assessment, and supervision of Special Education.

EDSP 6461 - Advanced Spoken Language 3 cr. Thursday, on-line, 4:30pm -7:10pm

Prerequisite: EDSP 6460 or consent of department. This course focuses on the advanced knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with children who have cochlear implants and other assistive listening devices.  It includes principles of speech science, aural habilitation, and collaborative work activities.

 

 EDSP 6945 - Practicum -- Hearing Impaired 3 cr. (Arranged Time)

Prerequisite: consent of department. Field work, observations, seminars, lectures, and/or empirical research projects with hearing impaired children or adults in an academic or rehabilitation setting.

 

Summer Program Note

This summer, in addition to our intensive 1-week long on-campus classes, we will be offering two certification classes in deaf education as part of UNO’s Summer Abroad Program, “The Glories of France.” Classes will be held on the beautiful Mediterranean coast in Montpellier, France from July 4-August 7th. All classes will be taught in English and financial aid is available to attend the program.

Visual Impairment / Blindness

EDSP 6850 - Advanced Educational Procedures for Students with Visual Impairments 3 cr. Monday, on-line, 4:30pm-7:10pm

Prerequisites: EDSP 4820, 4830, or consent of the department.

A study of advanced educational strategies utilized in teaching students with visual impairments. Examination of procedures for teaching Braille reading, the Nemeth Braille code for mathematics and science, and the use of electronic devices for reading and orientation and mobility.

EDSP 6990 - Selected Topics in Special  Education & Habilitative Services: Assessment of Individuals with Visual Impairments 3 cr. Tuesday, on-line, 4:30pm-7:10pm

Prerequisite: consent of the department. An examination of the assessment process of individuals with visual impairments, primarily focusing on functional vision evaluation and learning media assessment. Collaboration, assessment components, material adaptation, and how to analyze and utilize the resulting information will be examined.

6980 - Practicum -- Visual Impairment  3 cr. (arranged times)

Prerequisites: EDSP 4820, 4830, 6840, and 6850 or consent of department. The course consists of supervised field work, observations, seminars, lectures, and/or empirical research in the area of visual impairment.

Once accepted you may register through the WEBSTAR link on the UNO homepage ( http://www.uno.edu  ). All current UNO students can register for these classes as they usually do through WEBSTAR. Once registered you will be entered into your course’s Blackboard site. It is important that you check your course Blackboard site the week before classes to make sure you are ready to attend your first class.
